University of Baltimore 's Usability Study on Drupal

Edit:
Video can be seen at http://buytaert.net/usability-usability-and-usability

The university of Minnessota and the University of Baltimore have both done usability studies on Drupal 6. The University of Baltimores study can be downloaded here (found it through Dries Buytaert's blog):

Nick Lewis has a few suggestion based on the above study:

One of Nick's suggestions is that more buttons be used. I do particularly like the suggestion as it leaves one less click for users who want to save the blog post instead of just publishing it Kudos/+1 to that idea:

(The rest of this post is off topic yet related to the title)

I seriously think the Book modules page navigation interface needs an overhaul. Its a bit complicated as it is to navigate between pages (although writing a book page and organizing the pages for the author is easy enough, its navigating the book pages that seems cumbersome.) I'll probably get around to illustrating a more intuitive way for book readers to navigate through the book pages although as important as improving the book module is, I don't think thats a very high priority for improving Drupals overall UI. The use of Heirarchical select (by Wim Leers) to select books, book chapters and pages could make it easier though.

Wireframing wise, Im just sitting back as of now and watching http://groups.drupal.org/usability for a high priority UI overhaul need such as the one initiated by Eigentor for node forms on http://groups.drupal.org/node/8305 . In the meantime I'll be skinning (ie. creating website themes from a Photoshop or, even better, a Fireworks based design) websites until a worthy cause for a wireframing session is called for.

As of now making it easier to enter information into a website should be priority one imho.

  • As of now creating pre made content is ok thanks to the create content entry link.
  • Chosing the content options has been improved thanks to the node forms module (credit goes to ubercart accordian idea, eigentors initative to use the same for node forms, Bevan for creating a working protype based on my wireframes and Joakim Stai (Ximo) for turning into a Drupal module.
    • Nick Lewis' suggestion for intelligent buttons takes things a step further

Whats the next step (someone whose a usability analyst, please enlighten me?) for most users who enter data into a website for storage (I'll deal with how the data is navigated by end users later.)

Create new content types or manage the data?

I wager most site admins/owners would want to manage the data next.

I personally created my own menu shortcut for managing content. Ideally just like the create content menu link allows users to:

  • Add Story/Article
  • Add story
  • Add New Content Type Entry

There should be a manage content link that allows users to :

  • Manage Stories/Articles
  • Manage Pages
  • Manage New Conent Type Entries

As of now your_drupal_site.com/admin/node/content seems more busy and needs more organization.

Instead of a drop down box, how about just links, for each content type that exists, to screens/pages (I prefer the term 'screen' over 'pages' for websites) with options to manage those content types?

While http://stevejbayer.com and http://stevebayer.net both have a google page rank of 4, I'm mothballing and pulling content from there over to http://stevejbayer.com since stevejbayer.com has a lot more visitors than stevebayer.net

Exercising my theming skills, I've transformed http://stevejbayer.com/resources into a replica of its stevebayer.net counterpart. That's right, I got the pushbutton theme to work on just one page of the site thanks to http://drupal.org/node/139766 while the remaining pages share a different theme. There was a bit of sidebar juggling involved as the theme in use right now (Barron) has the left sidebar as the default sidebar but displays it on the right. A bit of switching php calls and td (gasp a drupal core theme uses tables?)
